50's 'A' continue winning ways...

The Over 50s "A" took on Somerset for the first time this campaign at Backwell Flax Bourton CC on Thursday. Tim lost the toss and Somerset elected to bat. Tilly then took her place in the shade on the boundary as her owner took to the field. We started at 1.02 with 10 men, with Robbo yet to arrive. His car was then seen bouncing and wobbling along the track behind the bowlers arm after a couple of overs, in fact Robbo was bouncing and wobbling a bit too!

Somerset got off to a quick start, racing to 21 off 3 overs. Opening bowler Steve Wiltshire, making his Seniors debut, going for 21 off his first 2 overs. But he recovered well to only concede a further 16 runs from his next 5 overs; a bit rusty maybe! A few half chances went begging and an uncharacteristic drop from the skipper at cover, meant Somerset reached 66-0 from 18 overs. Phil Edge then bowled Barr for 43 in his 1st over and got fellow opener Chadwick, LBW for 20, in his next over, Somerset were then 85-2 off 21. The Somerset "big guns" then came in at 3 and 4, taking the score to 148-2 off 36 overs before skipper Harvey was superbly run out going for a 2nd run by Tony Clarkson from the long 80 yard cover boundary for 22.  The expected big hitting came in the latter overs, but through more excellent fielding and good bowling, we managed to restrict Somerset to 201-5 off the 45 overs. Phil Edge taking 2 more wickets in the final overs, including the dangerous Griffiths, well stumped by Luv Duggall for 50, and finishing with 4-37 off 8 overs.

Tony Clarkson and Andy Bolton opened the innings and through patient batting, excellent running between the wickets, and some top quality shots, they put on 131 for the 1st wicket until TC was out LBW for 73 in the 28th over. Andy then fell for 54, caught at backward point, 3 overs later, with the score now on 146-2. But Robbo and Tim then put the game beyond doubt smashing 26 and 23 respectively in short time, although both were out, well caught, before we managed to get over the finishing line. But that gave Mo Fadra, on his Over 50s "A" first appearance  this season, the chance to score 8 off 3 balls including a very impressive cover drive. Billy Partridge finally hit the winning run in the 42nd over to see us home and all but secure a place in the semi finals.

Thanks to Ray for umpiring and Eileen for scoring, and once again to our small loyal band of supporters namely Stan, Thorny, Phil and Celia Brown (who turned up to support us even though Phil wasn't playing, with Celia on electronic scoreboard duties), Jackie Partridge and Rachael Bolton; and of course our team mascot Tilly.

A great all round performance by all concerned and good to get back to winning ways after our previous 2 defeats. Outside of the Championship,  we take on Surrey at home next Wednesday, with our last league game at home to Somerset on 13th August. Then bring on the Semis!

Cmon the Glos!
