50's win the 'International'...

posted 19 Jun 2015, 00:41 by Bill Lawrence

I receive a text from Len in the morning saying that Ian from Wales had contacted him wondering if the match was still on. I wondered who Ian was as the Wales contact according to the 2015 sheet is Danny. No wonder he didn't reply a few days ago when I rang. Saw Ian at the match. He has been the contact for the last 3 years!

We won the toss and inserted Wales on a slightly green pitch. The boys were up for this one! The Wales number 1 batsman was caught behind by Jem Brooks off Chris Trembath in the 6th over with the score on 18. The captain bowling with pace off his long run! A double wicket maiden for Kenny Earl followed with another caught behind the first ball of Trembath's 4th over. Wales are now 18 for 4.

An excellent partnership of 50 followed. Then 3 quick wickets, another 50 partnership, then 3 quick wickets and Wales scrambled to 149 all out.

Their cause wasn't helped by 3 silly run-outs.

After an excellent pasta tea, Martyn Bowyer was caught at slip in the first over but a stand of 82 between Tony Wright and Simon Hinks followed. Both batsmen started watchfully and then accelerated with some glorious shots. Nick Hennessy nervously walked to the crease on Hinks' departure and his first ever runs for the team ( a lovely straight drive ) were generously applauded.

No further wickets fell. We won by 8 wickets with more than 18 overs remaining.

The weather held, the crowd was good. It was great to see Chris Tabb at the match and we all gave him our best wishes. After a couple of beers, a large number proceeded to The White Horse in Westbury-on-Trym for more, and some food. Maybe a few sore heads yesterday morning.

Thanks to everybody who was involved with the match, especially Shirehampton CC. and, of course, Eileen.
